Senator Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang (right) looked at the sketch of the mosque which is to be built in Seville, Spain during the courtesy call by the Granada Mosque President, Malik Abderahman, who represents the Islamic community in Spain, at Parliament. The meeting was an effort of the Spain’s Islamic Community Foundation to collect fund for building a Mosque and Community Centre in Seville, Spain.

He said during the 40-minute meeting, Malik expressed his intention to seek formal financial assistance from the people of Malaysia, including the general public and private sector to build the mosque which would cost 17 million euro (RM71.2 million).

“Some of my colleagues in Parliament and I will try our best to help them. We will consider our small contribution. We truly wish to help the Muslims in Seville to have a mosque of their own,” he told the reporters after the meeting.

Abu Zahar said that each individual and organization of Malaysia is welcomed to offer financial contribution to make the mosque project a success. According to him, although there are only two million Muslims out of the 50 million population of Spain, they practise Islam same as the Muslims in Malaysia.

Malik said, “For us, this project will not be just a mosque, we want it to be a centre for Muslims and non-Muslims in Spain to have links with one another. This is because although we (the Muslims) are a minority, we work together with all societies in Spain like in the field of education and economy.”

Present also were Hon. Senator Datuk Doris Sophia Ak Brodi, Deputy President of The Senate, a few members of the Senate, and Datuk Lamien Sawiyo, Chief Administrator of Parliament. The courtesy call ended with a lunch reception for the delegation.
