Parliament of Malaysia, 18 May 2015 – Both Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Dato' Hasan Arifin took their oath as the new Members of Parliament for Permatang Pauh and Rompin, during  the Second Meeting of the Third Term of the 13th Parliament on Monday. The swearing-in ceremony was held before the Speaker of the House of Representatives, H.E. Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia and other parliamentarians soon after the commencement of the parliamentary session.

Dr Wan Azizah, who is the president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), is back as a member of the House of Representatives after winning in the Permatang Pauh by-election with a majority of 8,841 votes, defeating Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate, Suhaimi Sabudin, who obtained 21,475 votes. She had also served as the Opposition Leader from March to July 2008.

After she won the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat in the 12th General Election, she was endorsed by the Pakatan Rakyat to lead the opposition coalition in the House of Representatives. She vacated the seat in July 2008 when her husband and PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced his return to politics. Anwar won the seat in Permatang Pauh by-election on 26 Aug 2008.

She retained the seat before this as it was held by PKR Advisor who is also her husband, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and who lost his eligibility after he was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison for sodomizing his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan seven years ago.

Meanwhile Dato' Hasan, 62, was born in Kampung Ayau, Leban Chondong and held the post as Rompin acting UMNO Division Chief. He is able to retain the seat for BN after defeating PAS candidate, Nazri Ahmad with a majority of 8,895 votes. Nazri Ahmad, secured 14,901 votes. Dato' Hassan, 62, able to obtained 23,796 votes, about 61 percent compared to the votes obtained by Nazri.   

The Rompin by-election was held following the death of its incumbent, Tan Sri Dr. Jamaluddin Jarjis in a helicopter crash in Semenyih, Selangor on 4 April. In the 13th General Election, Tan Sri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis had retained the seat for six terms after defeating Dewan Muslimat PAS chief Nuridah Mohd Salleh with a majority of 15,114 votes.

The sitting of the House is expected to be held for 16 days, with adjournment for four days from 1 to 4 June, for the Hari Gawai celebrations.  The sitting will resume on 8 until 18 June, Monday to Thursday, from 10am to 5.30pm.
