Parliament Building - Current Development

Given that Parliament Building has turned 50 years old, restoration and upgrading works of Parliament Building has been started under the 10th Malaysia Plan (RMK-10) under a few phases with the allocation of RM520 million. The objective of the implementation of the project is to ensure the lifespan of the building can be increased to benefit our future generation.

PHASE 1A
 
The First Phase started on 2011 in which a Multipurpose Hall was renovated to become House Block to temporary allocates the House of the Representatives and the Senate. Renovation works were done for a duration of 5 months (28 March 2011 to 5 September 2011) with the overall cost of RM31 million. The Third Meeting of the Fourth Session of the Twelfth Parliament was the first meeting held at the House Block which was held on the 3 October 2011.

PHASE 2A
 
On 1 March 2012, Works to Repair Facade Panel and Pinnacle Rooftop, Parliament Building were done under Phase 2A and was fully completed on 26 September 2013. The overall cost of the project was RM15.5 million. The works were completed in 19 months and a Handover Ceremony was done on 11 November 2013 at Parliament of Malaysia by the Public Works Department.  

Phase 2A Project involved works to repair Facade Panel of the Main Building and Tower Block which has a pineapple-skin design made of terrazzo measuring 11 feet high and 40 inches wide, the inside and outside of the pinnacle rooftop located at the Main Building and other related works.

On 1 March 2012, works to repair Facade Panel and Pinnacle Rooftop, Parliament Building was implemented under Phase 2A and was expected to finish on May 2013.

Here are the pictures of works to repair pinnacle are being done.
36-metre-high scaffolding was installed outside of the pinnacle roof. The works involved in that area are repairing of the concrete structure and water proofing system at the exterior of pinnacle roof.
 
 
42-metre-high scaffolding was installed in the House of Representatives at the Main Block. The works involved in the area are concrete structure and acoustic system repair at the interior of the roof.
 
PHASE 2B
 
The next phase of the project is Phase 2B, Proposed Restoration Works and Upgrading of Parliament of Malaysia Building. This project involves the inside of the Main Block, Parliament Square and its surrounding areas. The scope of works are more focused on structural repair works, upgrading the House of Representatives and the Senate, upgrading the infrastructure and equipments for mechanical systems,  electrical and information technology systems as well as other works involved with the scope of repairing the Main Block.
 
Phase 2B project is currently at the stage of procurement by JKR and construction work is expected to begin in March 2014. The ceiling cost of this project is RM185 million and the estimated duration of the project is 30 months.
 
A temporary office was completed built within the scope of Phase 2B project to accommodate the offices and staff moved from the Main Block during construction works. Among the offices involved are the Office of the President of the Senate, the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the  Office of the Deputy Speakers, Library, Research Division, Security Department, Facilities and Landscape Maintenance Division as well as all staff who were previously located at the Main Block. This change will be implemented at the beginning of the project. Part of the office will be moved to House Block.


PHASE 3A

The next phase is Phase 3 which is the Construction of Block for Members of Parliament and the Administration Office and other Blocks of Supporting Offices. The construction began in 3 November 2014 and will be completed in 2 November 2016.


PHASE 2C

Phase 2C is a project to Repair and Upgrade Tower Block of Parliament of Malaysia. The project is still at the planning level by JKR.
