TAN SRI JOHARI REPRESENTS ASEAN AT 6TH WORLD SPEAKERS’ CONFERENCE, REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO PEACE AND JUSTICE IN PALESTINE

KUALA LUMPUR, 28 July – YB Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr.) Johari Abdul, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Malaysia, is scheduled to attend the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, which will be held from 28 to 31 July 2025 at the Palais des Nations, Geneva.

This high-impact conference is jointly organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations (UN), bringing together over 110 Speakers of Parliament from across the world. Tan Sri Johari’s attendance, in his capacity as President of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), reflects ASEAN parliaments’ collective commitment to playing an active role in strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation, safeguarding multilateralism, advancing collective security and upholding global inclusivity amidst growing geopolitical tensions.

This year, parliamentary leaders are expected to engage directly with heads of international organisations, leading academics, civil society representatives and the media, making this conference a strategic platform for shaping collective action towards peace, justice and shared prosperity.
Tan Sri Johari is scheduled to deliver a statement during the General Debate themed “A World in Turmoil: Parliamentary Cooperation and Multilateralism for Peace, Justice and Prosperity for All” on 29 July 2025. In his remarks, he will represent Malaysia’s voice in advocating for a rules-based international order, the primacy of justice and the vital role of strong and independent parliamentary institutions. He will also reiterate Malaysia’s firm stance on the continued oppression of the Palestinian people in Gaza and urge parliaments around the world not to remain silent in the face of persistent violations of fundamental humanitarian principles and international law.

In addition, Tan Sri Johari is also scheduled to hold bilateral engagements with several parliamentary leaders, including representatives from the Islamic Republic of Iran to discuss avenues in upholding the UN Charter and international law to ensure peace and security.
These inter-parliamentary dialogues serve as an important platform to build open channels of communication and pursue peaceful solutions grounded in the principles of the United Nations Charter. As President of AIPA, the Parliament of Malaysia remains consistent in voicing its support for the sovereignty of the Palestinian people and will continue to bring the voice of the ASEAN region to the global stage as a bloc that champions peace, dialogue towards the pursuit of just and lasting solutions based on humanitarian principles and international law.
Malaysia’s participation in this conference reaffirms the role of parliament not merely as a law-making institution, but as a powerful force for advancing inter-parliamentary dialogue, bridging global policy with grassroots realities and driving collective action towards a more peaceful, just, and inclusive world.
